This product is a joke. When you have them side by side, it's immediately apparent that the fabric on this version is much less adept at the rather straightforward task of cleaning a record. I couldn't believe it - it's literally a piece of corduroy tacked onto a wooden block. I found a mint version of the old RCA discwasher on eBay, and I suggest you do the same. The old version came with a 12 page manual, for crying out loud. As vinyl sales continue to increase, I hope that soon they will pressured to bring back the "old" discwasher - this is a pale immitation.
I had been using a soft cloth dustcloth, folded and dampened with water to clean off the dust. This is NOT a "Discwasher". Why. I agreed that it didn't LOOK like the Discwasher that I remembered originally.
Another cost-cut. I just HOPED that the hype from the negative reviews was the usual griping that some people always do. But hope was dashed after actually "using" it. What a dope I was for not looking at reviews before acting. There cannot be $1.00 of "value" in what they are selling. I saw one go for $51 the other day.
Because people who want something that works want it as new as possible, and the cost doesn't matter. This ain't new, it's a fake China mfg product that RCA allowed their name on without doing enough research. And OBTW, mine doesn't even have the hole for the bottle in the handle.
They are making $10 to $20 for every copy that they sell. As in all of the reviews that I've seen, post-facto, I was in denial at first.
And since the "cleaning fluid" is really nothing more than alcohol, you can't save much more there. So what you get is a wooden handle, cut-off from a length of stock, a piece of corduroy sewed over a piece of sponge rubber, and a couple of plastic mouldings AND GET THIS. THAT treatment worked just as well, maybe BETTER than the "Discwasher" that I received. How could ANY conscientious "manufacturer" actually SELL something this useless.PLEASE heed the words of the reviewers and look to e-bay for a used one as I did.
I have a vintage brush on the way for which I paid $10.50. There isn't even a comprehensive instruction manual anymore either.
A class action suit could be in order on RCA for everyone who naively bought the "bootleg" copy.I look forward to receiving my OLD brush.
Now RCA is nothing but a sellout, only a label that Corporate croonies bought, to put on the junk they import from China. When I received my new "discwasher by RCA", #RD1006, the first thing I noticed was is, "What happen to the nice storage box it used to come with". I have previously owned the D3 discwasher system, and still have and use my D4 system, which was orignally marketed around 1981. I accept my share of the blame, as I work on the Waterfront, purchase some of these products, and am one of the many Longshoremen that unload these ships from China. Globalization's noose is choking us in many ways. P.S.
Under futher, closer inspection of the pad, with high magnification, you will see that this new cleaner does not have the patented, unidirectional, micro-fiber cloth covering, that the original D4 cleaner had. Under initial inspection, I noticed that the quality of the wood used for the handle, and mainly the pad, is quite poor and inferior, compared to the original discwasher, (that was made in Columbia Missouri, USA). Instead, what the new cleaner appears to have, is a "corduroy" pad cover, not unlike the (Levi) "Cords", I used to wear in the Seventies. The new pad material looks bundled, omnidirection, and does not look like it would be conducive to cleaning the micro-grooves of a vinyl record. I recently purchased a new, what I though would be a "discwasher". This also brings into question, the quality of the D4+ fluid that now comes with it, from China. This is sad but true testiment to the present condition of our ecomomy, as top quality, AMERICAN manufacturing has disappeared to overseas (Chinese mainly) inferior productions, due to economics, competition and greed, of many former, American companies.
RCA was a great company, the "inventer and the innovator", and actually the manufacturer at one time, of many quality products. They used to produce some of the finest vacuum tubes made, a technology which still today reproduces some of the finest sound today. I tried to find specfic information on this item, on the parent companies websites, but a search returned no results. It now comes bubble packaged of course, with only a small cheap cloth bag for storage. Shame on you.
Wether this new pad has been engineered, or actually works, I do not know, because I refuse to use it on my precious vinyl. Imagine that. Shame on us. We all have to eat.
Product arrived on time and was exactly as described on site. I look forward to the next opportunity to purchase from this merchant.
